Bite Beauty’s Lip Lab located in downtown Toronto is a must-try experience for all makeup and lipstick enthusiasts! Bite Beauty lipsticks are made in Toronto with edible ingredients and a nourishing formula. At the lab you can experience the art of customizing your own lipstick to your liking!
I went on a Saturday afternoon with a group of 7 girlfriends. The shop isn’t big, there are maybe 14 seats total. Given that it was the weekend and we were a large group, we understandably had to wait around 15 minutes even with an appointment before we were seated. While we were waiting, we browsed their enormous catalogue of almost 200 lipstick shades. We took mental notes which pigments we liked and wanted to mix, so the time passed by rather quickly.
Once we were seated, our group was split in half with two lab artists each taking care of 4 people. Your experience might depend on the artist helping you. Ours was friendly, chatty and a little sassy ;D The two girls before me both wanted nude shades, so when it was my turn, he joked ‘Girllll, you better not tell me you want a nude shade too! You just can’t!’ Luckily for both of us, I was going to be adventurous and wanted a dark shade. Nude lipsticks are all I wear in my everyday life, but I figured when better than at a place where I can try and tweak the colour to my exact liking with expert opinion to commit to a bold custom made shade?!
You can be specific and list the pigment names you had in mind, or be generic like me and say ‘dark red maybe purple-ish’. The artist will then start mixing on a clear sheet while occasionally glimpsing up at you. Once the shade is ready, you use a little brush and paint it on. Your girlfriends give their opinion, the artist gives theirs, and the colour gets adjusted accordingly. Repeat once or twice until you find ‘The One’.
This process happens in turns, so while one person is being served, the rest can take the time to look in the mirror, take selfies, use makeup remover and think about finish and scents! You can choose up to 2 scents from the following choices: Cherry, Mint, Vanilla, Fresh Citrus, Violet, Coconut, Citrus Mango, Wild Berry, Lime.
Once everyone is settled on a colour, the artist pours them into molds on a freezer. After they’ve solidified, the artist cups them into Bite’s signature tube packaging. This process is very interesting to watch. Sometimes depending on the consistency, there may be cracks in the lipstick, so make sure to double check yours. While you’re waiting, there is a small area set up near the back of the shop with a selfie ring light. It’s the perfect opportunity to snap a pic of your new custom lip colour!
Lucky for us, a promotion was going on where we got a second lipstick for free! There was a choice of 4 colours for the free lipstick, I chose Rose Gold. It’s more of a sheer colour that goes well on top of another colour.
We had a blast and we’re all happy with the lipsticks we got. I would recommend this experience for girls night, bachelorette parties, birthday parties, or any special occasion!
