Once in a while my husband and I like to start our day with a dim sum date! Chinese dim sum is great, you can have so much bite-sized variety! We wanted to try a restaurant we haven’t been for ‘yum cha’ before. Skyview Fusion Cuisine came to mind because we’ve had dinner there and the food was good so we had some expectations.
We went super early on a Monday around 9:30am and were seated right away. The place was surprisingly packed already and we were seated in a small back room. The room only fit 3 tables for parties of 2, 2 and 4. It was a little too intimate and everyone can basically hear each other’s conversations.
The tea had strong aromatic flavour and it came with an extra packet.
Skyview Specialty Dim Sum Platter
The menu doesn’t specify what items are included so it was a surprise when it showed up! The top tier is sweet and the bottom is savoury. The desserts included: papaya milk pudding, puff pastry milk tart, coconut & osmanthus jello cake, lotus seed puff pastry, and assorted fruits. The bottom tier included: baked seafood & pork pastry with curry sauce, baked BBQ pork puff pastry, deep fried sticky pork dumpling, chicken feet, seaweed salad and beans. The standout items for me are the papaya milk and milk tart. Everything else was average.
Steamed Mushroom and Vegetable Dumpling
This type of vegetable dumpling is a staple for me every time I have dimsum so I’ve tried this dish from quite a few places. This one from Skyview ranks somewhere in the middle for me. The dumpling wrap texture was chewy and bouncy but the vegetables inside were the wrong kind! These are usually made with pea sprouts (豆苗), but here they are made with bok choy (白菜).
Steamed Salty Egg Yolk Cream Bun
This was my favourite dish of the day. The buns were fresh, steaming and soft. The yolky insides had a great sweet and savoury taste. It wasn’t as liquidy as it should be, but it was still delicious!
Boiled Pig Trotter and Egg Ginger in Sweet Vinegar
They give you a good amount of pig trotter but only 1 egg. I was disappointed in this dish. The sauce was too sweet and didn’t have much ginger taste. I usually look forward to the eggs in this dish, but they overcooked it. The egg was barely edible, it was so dried out and hard almost plastic rubber-like.
This was pretty standard mango pudding. There were no real mango pieces. The green jello on the bottom kind of overpowered the mango taste so I ate around it. The evaporated milk it comes with is a great addition!
Overall I thought dimsum at Skyview was decent. The restaurant atmosphere and service were both good. The presentation of the food is above average, sometimes even looking better than it tasting. The food itself could be better, but my review is only limited to what I ordered. I would recommend coming here if you want fancy-looking dim sum!
